Farewell, Elementary School

What a difference a week makes! Last week we saw Andy bundled up for Junuary, but this week the sun decided it could give us a little bit of love, just in time for Kaylee's 5th Grade End of the Year Party! This was VERY good news, because as part of the party, they had an hour at our favorite local cooldown spot, the Fircrest Pool!

Cindy was in charge of planning the party, and I took the day off work to help. After a morning assembly where various awards were given out, both 5th grade classes walked down to the park to get their party on!

Once all the group pictures were taken, it was Class vs. Class Tug-o-War time!

Mr Borg's class (YAY!) handily defeated Mrs. Smith's class (Boo!) for a decisive victory. That was followed by a couple other variations, including Boys vs. Girls (Girls Won, and were already on their way to victory BEFORE I jumped in and helped), and Kids vs. Parents. That one was extra fun, because as parents, we realized that we were vastly outnumbered. Our strategy to overcome this was to not even try to win, but rather to entertain ourselves at our cocky kids' expense. The whistle blew to start the war, we all held our ground for a few seconds, then on the count of three, we let go of the rope, sending 5th graders tumbling into a grumbling heap on the grass!

That was followed by a Class vs. Class kickball game, and I'm pretty sure Mr. Borg's class (YAY!) won that as well. If they didn't, they should have, so I'm gonna just go with them winning.

Then we had all the kids line up and get into five groups for relay games.

These games consisted of HulaHoop relay races, Carrying Bulgar Wheat in a Wooden Spoon relay races, a Balloon Brigade relay race, and a Pie Eating contest, where the kids had to bury their faces into a plate full of whipped cream and find a piece of bubble gum. Then they have to chew that bubble gum and the first person to blow a bubble is declared the winner!

Sadly, that wasn't the first bubble blown in Kaylee's group, so she didn't win. But she did drown her sorrows in sweet creamy goodness!

While all these shenanigans were going on, Cindy was in the kitchen preparing a feast fit for fifth graders!

The kids moved in like a swarm of locusts, devouring pizza, chips and pop, while avoiding the vegetable trays with surgical precision! And well, I guess they weren't too locust-like, since there was enough pizza left over that we took a whole one home for dinner that night!

Then it was SWIMMING TIME!!

The kids definitely made the most of their hour in the pool. After drying off and getting dressed, they had cake and ice cream, and spent the last few minutes signing yearbooks and being excited about middle school next year.

Planning this party had been really stressful for the final few days leading up to it, with weather concerns and having to continually think about a backup plan... Luckily, everything went off without a hitch, and Kaylee's class had the best 5th Grade End of Year Party they'd ever had!

Congratulations for the excellence you've displayed through the first six years of school, Kaylee!

We Love You!!

  1. First off I have a question. Was that your kitchen??? If so, man what a great kitchen, it looks huge! Now for my real comment. That sounds like the best "End of the year and elementary school" party ever. I'm so proud of you two for being the "go to" parents. Happy Summer Vacation to everyone!!!

  2. No, that's not our kitchen... That's the kitchen at the Fircrest Park Recreation Center. Our kitchen is much smaller... :(

The party was completely fun, and as far as I know, every kid there had a good and/or great time!

  4. Time flies! I remember being at your apartment years ago and it was the day before school. Cindy was writing the girls names on their school supplies. My recollection is that Kaylee was going into kindergarten. Congrats Kaylee!

  5. Actually, that would ave had to have been pre-school... By the time she started kindergarten, we were already in our first house down here...

Talk about time flying!! But ut's very nice to have been in one place long enough that Kaylee was at the same school from Kindergarten through 5th grade... A luxury our older kids didn't have!
