Great Wolf is Great!

We have returned from our adventure at the Great Wolf Lodge Waterpark, and we all had a great time! Of course, any family vacation should have a moment of review when it's over, and that's even more so when the vacation took place at a location that's only been open for three weeks... So for many - if not most - of you, here's the first hands-on review of the Great Wolf Lodge in good ol' Grand Mound, WA!

First, a little about the structure of the lodge/park. It's not like most waterparks, where you simply show up, pay your admission and get inside. This waterpark is firmly attached to the hotel, and is only open to hotel guests. This has both good and bad aspects:

Bad:
  • The hotel ain't cheap. Our room was $348 for one night, plus tax. That did include waterpark access for all six of us though.
  • Like I said above, being linked to the hotel makes impulse visits nearly impossible.

Good:

  • Since the park is only open to hotel guests, they have a very clear maximum capacity, and they have built the park to accommodate everyone. When we were there, the hotel was completely booked, and yet the waterpark didn't feel overly crowded. We've certainly battled far worse crowds at Wild Waves.
  • Although our hotel bill was $348, that included waterpark access for all six of us. Park access runs $30 per person, so that was $180 in access built into our room fee. That brings the base room fee down to a much-more reasonable $168.
  • This is a hotel that was designed for families. And not just the "family of four" that most "family" things are geared towards.. Every room in the hotel is a suite that sleeps from 6-8 people.
  • Finally, the hotel is very nice. Part of that comes from being brand new, but it's clearly built with quality in mind. Friday night as we went to sleep, I didn't hear ANY noise from either neighboring room, or the floor above. And the showerhead was actually high enough on the wall that I didn't have to stoop down to get under it and take a shower! (it shouldn't be such a big deal, but it seems like most hotel showers were designed for unrealistically short people)

So there is, in my opinion, more good than bad to this arrangement. So on with the review!

We got there at 1:00 pm. Officially, check in isn't until 4, but they let you start using the park at 1 even if your room isn't ready yet. Ours WAS ready though, so we got to go right up, get into our suits, and hit the water! Our 5th floor room had pretty good views. Here's the main thing we saw:

That's the same funnel slide I'd seen from the freeway four months ago, but seeing it from the inside was WAY nicer! Clearly the ground around it has been cleared for some yet-to-be-announced purpose, so I'll let the fact that it's not very pretty slide... for now... Here is another look out of our window:

Between the foreground trees and the background hill there are several lanes of Interstate, and a couple directions of train tracks. But we heard absolutely zero noise from either, another testament to how well built the hotel is.

Okay, so enough of the room - the whole reason you go there, is for the indoor water park!

Here are Ellysa, Kaylee, Tyler and Ellysa's best friend Karisa upon first hitting the waterpark. Behind them is the "fort" that most such parks have, with tons of squirting water everywhere, and a 5,000 gallon bucket on top that dumps every few minutes. Normally, I hate the fort. Despise it. Because I HATE the feeling of getting pelted with ice water, which is what it feels like at Wild Waves. But here, since the temperature in the park is 85 degrees every day, the water was downright pleasant! In fact, it was nice enough that Cindy and I decided to partake in the magic of a 5,000 gallon shower.

There's the bucket being filled...

Here's us happily waiting for our impeding drenching... Notice that Cindy's hair was still dry, so it was her first taste of water that day!

And what a taste! It comes down with so much force that even if you're standing far enough away to not get wet, there's a blast of air that's almost equally stunning.

Now that we were good and wet, I wanted to stand under this cool mushroom/rain thing.. It's a big metal mushroom that has water pouring down around it, but is dry inside.

...hard to see through the wall of water...

Peek-A-Boo!

Lots of fun, but like the hotel, we didn't come here for a watershroom or a fort with a big bucket. We came to slide!!!

The slides are amazing. I'm sorely lacking in action pictures, because I don't have a waterproof camera case. But trust me. Amazing. Truly. That funnel slide you see from outside feels way bigger than it looks, when you're swooshing back and forth, heading for the exit at the bottom. You enter the big end of the funnel from a near-vertical drop that, even when you know it's coming, takes your breath away. At night time, the slide takes on a whole new dynamic because the entire ride is outside, and without the light of the sun, it's VERY similar to the new Space Mountain at Disneyland. Like Wild Waves' "Zooma Falls", the Howlin' Tornado uses the big yellow 4-person raft/tubes. But unlike "Zooma", you don't have to carry your own huge raft up all the stairs. They have this awesome contraption:

The lifeguard at the bottom puts your raft into the raft elevator, which carries it to the top for the next trip. SUCH a good idea! They also have some smaller, 1- or 2-person tube slides, where you do have to carry your own tube up the stairs. One of them was okay, but the other one was worth doing again and again and again. And we did.

They have a play pool with basketball hoops set up, and kids (and grownups too) playing water basketball... And there's a rope net over the pool at one point, with floating lilly pads that you can use to help you cross the bridge. Kaylee and Tyler were both victorious!

There's also a baby area that has its own mini fort (with little one gallon buckets that fill and dump... pretty cute) and small slides with nice warm bath temperature water. Nobody in our family needs that kind of area, so other than passing through on our way to the locker room, I didn't spend much time there.

But the Wave Pool was the best of its kind that I've ever encountered.

That's looking at the wave pool (with the watershroom on the left). Back by the canoe shop in the background, the water gets to be 5'6" deep. Every ten minutes the waves start up, and they are serious waves. On our first encounter, Cindy and I were in a double innertube, and got washed all the way to the shore. On future runs, I got better at beating the waves, but it takes a lot of effort, and it's kinda fun to get swept away. The kids had a blast and spent most of their non-sliding time here.

They keep the pool nice and clean too, clearly spelling out what they don't want you to do:

Finally, how do they enforce the "hotel guests only" policy at the park? Wristbands!

The white ones were simply pool passes. The blue one has an RFID tag, making it our room key, pool pass, "charge to room" device, and all around cool thing. I keep realizing that I left stuff out, like a teen lounge that had a free dance from 8:30-12:30 that Ellysa and Karisa thoroughly enjoyed... the grand lobby of the hotel has a clock tower that performs an audio-animatronic show:

And the buffet restaurant was good, but very expensive. Upon leaving, we decided that on our next visit, we'd drive half a mile down the road to the mom 'n' pop restaurant for dinner.

Final verdict? WIN! Everybody go play! Just don't expect to get off cheap.

The Wii Just Keeps Getting Better!

I like some things!

One thing is the Nintendo Wii.

Another thing is Strong Bad, from HomestarRunner.com.

Now imagine, just imagine, the two coming together in a 5 month series of episodic gaming through the Wii's upcoming WiiWare download service... No need to imagine, because it's happening!!

The WiiWare service launches May 12 (almost sounds like someone's birthday...) and I've seen lots of promising looking games announce for it, but nothing that got me smiling like this one!!

All the details are here. Now I just have to wait... At least I have vacation to occupy myself!

Vacation Countdown is Almost Done!

If you've hung out here on the blog at all over the past few weeks, you've seen the Vacation Countdown quietly ticking away the days until our Great Wolf Lodge Waterpark vacation. The Great Wolf Lodge is a brand new hotel and waterpark about an hour south of our house. It was still under construction, but recognizable as a "Place of Awesome" when Cindy and I drove down to Disneyland in December. She was sleeping the early drive away, and I woke her up pointing at it and saying "we HAVE to go there!"
(Here's the view from the freeway)

Well, they're open now, and we're gonna be there Friday, Saturday and part of Sunday. (all of us except Andy that is, who leaves tomorrow morning for a week in Hawaii with his mom...)
It seems like this Winter has been extra miserable, and refuses to make way for Spring, so a couple days in 85 degree climate controlled superhappyfunland sounds about as good as it gets!
I promise I'll think of you all while we're there... maybe...

Like Fish Playing Basketball!

So in the last week, you've seen Tyler the Hun, Andy the Comic Artist, Kaylee the Family Cake of Gratitude Cake Maker, and Mike & Cindy the Yahtzee Masters. But what about Ellysa?

Oh, she's been busy, all right...

She has been spending her days and nights (and occasionally her ridiculously early mornings) playing Water Polo! "Playing What?" you may ask? Water Polo is quite possibly my favorite high school sport ever. It's exactly like Basketball, only it's in water... and the goal looks more like a soccer goal than a round basket... and the ball is like a rough fuzzy volleyball... but other than those minor technicalities, it's basketball while treading water!

It's fast paced, the fouls fly fast and furious, at one game our Super Polo Player even got ejected! (yes, we were very proud!)

Of course, one of Cindy's favorite parts of it is the protective headgear... You can see in the picture above, there are black guards over the ears, and the net result that you can't really see in these pictures is that the girls all look like they have Princess Leia buns on!

Ellysa insists that they aren't actually "Leia Buns", but that's our official name for them. Everyone should come to a game, it really is the most fun high school sport to watch!

Oh, and when she's not in the pool, she's still perfecting the art of the flute. In fact, right before the game that these pictures came from, she had a concert... then ran up to the pool for a quick change for the game!

The only thing left to do is figure out if there's a setting on the camera that's actually compatible with the lighting at the school...

Tyler the Hun

Tyler's school started working on their annual Drama-Club production back in October, right after school started. This year they were doing Mulan, and Tyler was excited to be involved with it. He wound up cast as a Father (upholding tradition) and also as a Hun (determined to smash the Chinese tradition along with everything else!).

He did a great job, and was a very menacing hun. Except for the fact that every time he'd come running in with all the other huns, shaking his weapon in the air and shouting, he'd look over at us and break out a big cheesy grin! So I had to specifically get a close up of the all business, totally serious about conquering, Tyler the Hun.

Yahtzee!

You know how you’ll sometimes go a long time between doing things you enjoy, and then when you finally do, you’re saying things like “why don’t we do this more often?”

Well at our house we recently started playing Yahtzee again. It’s a game we all enjoy, but probably hadn’t played in 6 months or more. Then a few days ago, on an evening with no kids, no outside obligations, nothing better to do, Cindy and I decided to play a few rounds. And in a completely unexpected move, she got a Yahtzee!

Just a few rolls later, I scored one too!

That was fun and exciting, and we decided to leave the box out, so we’d remember to play more often. Well, last weekend, our beloved Elder Cram got his transfer notice… We have a tradition that on the Saturday before Transfer Monday, we take our missionaries out to ice cream at Mad Jack’s. (note to self: I need to blog about Mad Jack’s!) After the ice cream, Cram saw the Yahtzee box and declared that he HAD to play one more time, because he’d never actually won a game at our house. Not Cover Your Assets, not Speed Scrabble, not an earlier night of Yahtzee, and certainly not Guitar Hero, Excite Truck or Wii Sports... because, well, he never actually played any of those at our house. You know, two years of mission work at the exclusion of worldly entertainment.

I thought it was a great idea, we got set up to play, and we gave Cram the first turn. No rolling to see who goes first, this was his night! And sure enough, the first roll of the game resulted in this:

Yep, not just a Yahtzee, but my personal favorite Yahtzee, five 1’s! He was off to a great start, and the game kept going his way. I think it was because of the lucky souvenir hat he was wearing. But oh, what is a night of gaming without some added drama? See, I also gave Costales a souvenir hat. And apparently his was also lucky. Because right as it looked like a lock for Cram to win the game…

And just to further one-up Cram, he rolled five 2’s. And when the last dice had been thrown and the scores tallied, Cram lost by TWO POINTS. He murmured something about not being able to win a game in “this house”, put on his bike helmet over his lucky souvenir hat (they’d already used up their monthly miles allowance on the car) and pedaled off into the night. Since Sunday was our last chance to hang out with him, we invited them over for Brownies and goodbyes. Naturally, as soon as he got there, he demanded another shot at winning a game. We obliged, and it was pretty even, everyone doing okay, nobody really taking the lead. Then, on what would be his last turn, Cram said “If I get a Yahtzee on this roll, I WIN!” It took him all three tries, but the man got that which he spoke into being! Somehow we got so caught up in the magic of the moment that we never did get around to actually adding up the scores, or even taking a picture! We’ll just let him believe that he won. After all, if he’s got the kind of power to call a Yahtzee into being, I don’t think I want to mess with him too much…

Gratitude

Oops.

While I thought it was vitally important to make sure everyone on the Internet knows that cats want cheeseburgers, my lovely wife pointed out that I have a backlog of actual FAMILY stuff to blog about. Sheesh... But as usual, she's right... So here's a cool new FAMILY thing.

Last weekend, Cindy went to a daycare providers' wellness retreat. While there, she attended a class on gratitude, and how important it is to stop and think about how blessed your life is. So on Monday, that was our topic for Family Home Evening. She told us about a study that was done, focusing on the physical effects of gratitude, or of being aware of good things in your life. It was pretty amazing, just spending 15 minutes a day thinking about positive things showed measurable improvement in virtually every system of the body! And then she issued a challenge to the entire family:

We made, and are keeping Gratitude Journals for one week. This is a simple daily template that you fill out at some point - we're choosing to do it at bedtime, so we don't risk missing something great. The template consists of the following items:
  • List three things you're grateful for TODAY. (as opposed to generic things)
  • List two people you know you can count on to support you.
  • List one person who makes your life better.
  • Two things in my life that make me say "I'm Blessed!" (these would be things that are personal to you, maybe things you have that most other people don't... not a brag, but a blessing)

Cindy and I have added the additional criteria of trying not to repeat anything for the entire week, and by last night I was struggling on a couple of areas. And then I step back and look at the big picture, and my life is SO full of blessings and cause for gratitude that I can't believe I had trouble thinking of things. It's been a great exercise!

I would like to turn this around and challenge everyone reading this to try it out too! Do it for a week and see what happens when you literally count your blessings!

Kaylee was in charge of snack Monday night, and made a Family Cake of Gratitude. I love Family Cake of Gratitude!!

Not Brand New, But Still Fun

OK, first a disclaimer. This post isn't about a NEW thing. It's not even new to me. In fact, it's quite possible that it's past its prime... But it's still some funny stuff, and I just realized that there may still be people in the dark reaches of the Internet who haven't come across it yet, and I would be shirking my duty as a responsible blogger (is there such a thing?) if I didn't pass it along for all to enjoy.

So what am I talking about? A website called I Can Has Cheezburger, of course. If you like cats and like to laugh, my family and I highly recommend it. As far as I can tell, one of the earliest pictures, and possibly even the original, is this:

It can take a while to get acclimated to the dialect and the recurring themes, but the payoffs are great once you do. For example, here's one that showed up Monday that had me laughing pretty hard:

Go, Play, Have Fun!

It's Us!

For those of you who maybe haven't seen us recently, here's a family shot - minus Tyler :( - from a couple weeks ago. Our resident missionaries, Cram & Costales were kind enough to take the pic.. Then I traded places with them... Fun times!!

Then I took one of them sitting in with the family... Fun Times!

In Like A Lion, Out Like A Polar Bear

Ahh, March 27th. Daylight Savings time started long enough ago that we're well adjusted, it's even light at 7:00 am again... St. Patrick's day has come and gone... This year, even Easter is behind us! The first day of Spring was one whole week ago.

So Why... WHY, I ask, was this picture taken this morning in somewhere that doesn't end with "Alaska", "Colorado", or "Greenland"?

This was taken this morning in Black Diamond, maybe 20 miles southeast of Seattle. Their school is delayed by two hours today. Oh, and they have Spring Break NEXT WEEK.

I am appalled, disgusted, and ...uhhh... doubly appalled. And we darn well better get a real summer this year to make up for this nonsense.

Catching Up With Keeping Up With The Brinkerhoffs

Winter is behind us, Spring is (supposedly) upon us, so it's time to clear out all the pictures we took over the winter that never made it to the blog. They were supposed to, but remember, we have 4 kids, 2 cats and 5 chickens, meaning that blog updates sometimes fall to the back burner... So fasten your seatbelts, we're off!

Tyler turned double digits, and celebrated the big One-Oh with our family's tradition, brunch at the Space Needle.

Any meal at 500 feet up that ends with a steaming ice cream sundae is a good meal!

Cindy took Andy, Kaylee, Tyler and our friend Amy ice skating during Winter Break, because apparently they weren't cold enough already.

They seemed to have fun though. Or maybe they were smiling at first and then their faces froze that way?? (news flash: I hate am not a fan of ice skating)

I posted video of his free-throw skillz, but Tyler played lots of basketball games. Here he is pondering the coach's advice during a huddle...

Andy and Tyler got AirSoft pellet guns from their uncle Chuck for Christmas. Kaylee and Tyler posed with them. And all the raccoons in Fircrest are put on notice that entry into our yard can, and likely will, result in them getting yellow plastic balls embedded in their skin.

Also over the past couple months, things happened that didn't get photographically documented. We foster-parented a chicken that one of our friends found in his backyard. We had her for a week, while he built up a coop to keep her in. She was a miniature hen, and laid a few eggs during her time with us. Here is a picture of one of hers next to one of Layla's:

I never did get a picture of her, but she was cute. The daycare kids named her "Big Booty Judy". Her actual owner named her "Otis". This chicken will require therapy either way.

We also fostered a baby kitty, a very sweet little black and white female we named Aja. She just wandered into our house on a Friday afternoon and started eating our catfood, as if she had always lived there. One of the daycare kids suggested that we should call her Oreo. We rebuked that nonsense and had a great, playful day and a half with Aja. Then her owners called. And said that HIS name was Oreo. Whatever.

Well that should pretty much wrap this wrap-up up. I'll try to do more updating during Spring, and less wrap-up updating!

And The Winner Is...

First off, congratulations to the four finalists who correctly guessed...

"DOUBLE VISION" by FOREIGNER!

And a big thank you to everyone else who took a stab at it. Whether you were right or wrong, I loved reading the entries - and it's always nice to know people are reading!

We held a winner drawing ceremony tonight - watch it here:

Extra special big congratulations to Donald for not only guessing it right, but for making it past Kaylee's attempts to commandeer the TimTams for herself. We'll get your cookies in the mail ASAP - but just to help me feel better about it, you should email me your address. I'd hate to accidentally send it to your old house!

Finally, yes, there is another contest coming... It will be another musical variation on Name That Tune, only this time it won't involve deciphering an out-of-context sample from a remix. No, it's much more classic Name That Tune, and it centers around the music of the '80s. So brush up and be ready!

Contest Closed!

Well thanks to the Second Chance video I put up last week, we now have a four way tie in our little Quest for the TimTams! We’ll be drawing the winner tonight, from among these excellent musical detectives: (listed in the order they answered)

Donald Sorenson
Fenniffer Holmes
Susan Sorenson
Larisa Lowery

One of them will be the proud owner of Sticky Vanilla Toffee TimTams very soon!

The Latest from Andy

Many of you know that Andy (currently 15) has been making books, comic books, and comic strips for several years. He just created a new one that he thinks he'll be able to maintain for a longer run than anything he's ever done before, and it's pretty good! So I wanted to start posting it here as the Sunday Funnies.

Andy's new strip is called Rodney and Jim, and stars (unsurprisingly) Rodney and Jim. Here's Andy's introduction:

Rodney Redhart is the smarter of the two kids. He is almost always with Jim, but often times is shown at home, having problems there. Rodney can also be easily annoyed.

Jim is a very odd boy. He has a small head, doesn't speak, and is quite possibly feral. Jim provides no evidence of family, or where he's from, and usually hangs with Rodney, and always annoys him.

So here's their debut strip - enjoy it and come back next Sunday for the next installment!

Gotta Get It!

Coming on April 27, yet another compelling reason to own a Wii!

That clip makes me say loud and clear:

CONTEST SECOND CHANCE!

Well, it's been a week, and there have been a few valliant efforts, but nobody has gotten it right yet.

So I'm taking inspiration from Bob Barker. Yes, THAT Bob Barker. He did this game on the Price is Right called "Hole In One". It was a putting game. If you make the putt, you win the prize. However, if you missed your putt, he always acted like it was a big surprise when he said that the game was actually called "Hole in one... OR TWO!!" and pushed a button causing the titleboard to revolve and show the "Or Two" logo. Classic TV Brilliance.

Thanks to Bob's fine example, our little Miley Cyrus contest is going into overtime. This week's clue includes not only the Miley remix guitar riff, but also the original riff, in the original context, by the original band, originally originated in 1978. See if that helps you along, and send in those guesses. Those TimTams aren't going to eat themselves, after all!

Everything's Better with Pie Charts!

Literally and honestly made me laugh out loud.

My Kind of Prank!

This is absolutely brilliant. A large scale prank at New York's Grand Central Station, but a prank where nobody got hurt, nobody lost money, it was about as close to harmless as it is possible to be.

CONTEST TIME!

You're looking at a box of TimTams, quite possibly the best cookies to come out of Australia! (Way better than Vegemite, or any of the Musk flavored candy...)

This box of "Sticky Vanilla Toffee" arrived last week, sent by my friend Glen in Melbourne. One or two times a year, we send boxes of our local delights to each other, and I was delighted when his box arrived with four varieties of TimTams! This flavor was good enough that he sent two of them, and I downed the first box Saturday night. (Andy and Tyler helped, but I definitely ate way too many)

To avoid a repeat of that, since I AM still working hard at my fitness goals, I decided the other box has to go! SO it's CONTEST TIME!! And this time, I'm guaranteeing that the prize will be sent out. (Michael, Andy still owes you a bag of candy corn...)

So since most of us have kids these days, and most of those kids watch plenty of Disney Channel, this seems like a topical contest. To make it even more relevant, it also requires a knowledge of the music I grew up on. I guess you could say it's the Best of Both Worlds. (oh yeah, I went there!)

It's simple - Watch the video below, follow the directions, and win the cookies! Contest will run for one week - next Monday I'll put up a clip with the answer. If more than one person get it right, the winner will be chosen at random and the TimTams will be sent out as soon as postally possible. Have fun!
