Another Week, Another New Appliance

Several years ago, shortly after buying our first house, we bought a little chest freezer... And it's served us well, despite being somewhat too small, and somewhat too hard to keep organized.

However, you can see in the picture above, it is filled to capacity, and much of what is filling it is fresh frozen produce that we're taking full advantage of this year! On the top layer in the picture, are Peaches that were sliced and frozen today, Peapods that were picked, blanched and frozen today, Raspberries that were frozen over the last couple days, and beneath the raspberries, our very special Lemonade we made from lemons we picked while in Southern California back in December.

Add to that, the disposable pizzas, Costco meat, bread, and all the freezer jam and ice cream we've been making, and we are definitely OUT of freezer space.

So for the past two weeks, we've been scouring Craigslist for great freezer deals. And there have been some GREAT freezer deals! Unfortunately we have been too late to the party every time, and with the amount of freezing we needed to do, we were quickly running out of waiting time.

Today Cindy went up to the Sears Outlet Store, and they had a freezer that pretty much screamed out that it wanted to come live in our garage... Many thanks to my friend Martin who provided service with his truck and himself (in exchange for Freezer Jam!) for an hour! Thanks to his help, right next to the li'l chest is the Big Upright!

21 Cubic Feet of Extra Cold Coolness! Its first task will be to hold everything from its li'l neighbor so it can get a much needed defrost. Then it'll quickly get filled up with all the freezing we're doing.

We are SO excited that this year we'll have fresh fruits 'n' veggies all year round!!

  1. You have had appliance overhaul lately. This is fantastic news though. I love freezing things. It is so much easier than canning everything. Great find. The upright is so nice to have.

    Happy blanching and freezing.

  2. I second the coolness of an upright. I shouldn't complain about my chest freezer but things get seriously lost down inside there. Enjoy your produce!

  3. Oh...and why is it so dang wierd to me that my neighbor/visiting teacher/friend Jan comments on my cousin Mike's blog?

  5. Ah the old Sears Crash and Dent store. I think that just about any appliance or furniture that mon and dad bought new came from there. Congrats on the new freezer, uprights really are the easiest.
